Through the hard struggles Jamestown faced it is a town that survived and is still surving today. Jamestown was, and still is located on the tip of Virginia. The Jamestown settlement was first found in 1607 by an expedition to Chesapeake Bay that included 100 settlers. They sailed up the James River until they found a place to settle. They named this spot, Jamestown in honor of King James. Even from the beginning Jamestown was a complete disaster. The colony was swampy and full of mosquitoes carrying malaria. The Virginia Company of London lied and told the settlers that the colony would be rich of gold and other materials. So, instead of building shelters, growing food, and doing other things for survival the colonists spent their days looking for gold. The climate was also very difficult. There were hard long winters, and beaming hot summers.

John Smith
By:Jordana
John Smith was an amazing contribution to the Jamestown settlement. John Smith was an english adventurer and a soldier. He was one who improved Jamestown. He made a difference by saying, “He that will not work shall not eat.” This meant that you have to take responsibility and work in order to get supplies that are needed for surival, such as food. Before he improved Jamestown by saying that one little but life changing statement, the colonists took their time only looking for gold. If no one would have took responcibilty and work to get their supplies, then bad things could have happened such as, many people dieing.
Smith’s method worked. He was a great true man overall. For example, he ordered an existing wall around Jamestown. He also got the Powhatan tribe to trade their corn to the people of Jamestown. In 1609, John Smith was hurt in a gunpowder explosion. He then returned to England that same year. He really made a difference to the settlement, and that year eight hundred more settlers came to Jamestown!

Bacon’s Rebellion
By:Daniella

Bacon’s Rebellion was really important in Jamestown. What Bacon did was, try to take control of the House of Burgesses. Bacon had a crazy idea to burn down Jamestown, and so he did. The reason for his outrage was because he thought the taxes were too high and that the governor was showing favoritism towards large plantation owners. Bacon didn’t own any land so he took a group of landless colonists and complained. When the government didn’t do anything about it Bacon was furious. After this big event occurred Bacon became very sick. Back then if you were sick you would die, and that’s what happened to Bacon. There was no medicine to prevent him from dying.
American culture is influenced by other cultures from all over the world because our ideas were based on Europeans ideas. For example, people like Bacon would probably burn up a building. Governor Berkeley decided to hang all of Bacon’s followers, but not Bacon. “I guess that they weren’t crispy enough. “ After Bacon died, the House of Burgesses made a law that there can’t be one person having total power. Once Bacon’s Rebellion ended things became much easier for the settlers in Jamestown. Even though Bacon was crazy and did a bad thing it changed a lot of things for us.

By: Natalie

Have you ever seen the movie Pocahontas? Well, people that have seen the movie probably don’t think that Pocahontas is even real, but she is. When Pocahontas was just 13 she wandered off in the dark woods taking the wrong path home which landed her in Jamestown where her father’s enemies were.
The settlers at Jamestown had only arrived two years earlier from when Pocahontas turned up and when the English colonists anchored their ships right on the bank of the Powhatan’s empire the Powhatan had to resist from starting war with the English. The settlers didn’t even pay any respect to their land. The natives were furious about the invasion of their land and that is why Pocahontas’ father is enemies with the colonists.
In 1566 another monarch (Mary Queen of Scotts in Scotland) was created. They had a young king who would eventually become James VI of Scotland. The Powhatan was uniting his empire which was in North America. Once King James died at 21 there was a new queen named Elizabeth. Elizabeth had great characteristics such as being proud, dedicated and ambitious. All of the Indians despised the Spaniards and they all knew how to get to them.
When cultures meet there could be a war between the two different cultures. It could take time for two cultures to make a truce and unite as one. Then there would be peace amongst them. This is what happened to the Powhatan and the English settlers at Jamestown. If you’re wondering how this happened, it started when John Smith agreed to work for the Indians if the Indians gave them food, because at the time the colonists were almost starving. Eventually there was peace between them and everything was because of Pocahontas.
